How our environment
influences our health
Modern life is very challenging. The environmental influences we have created put a strain on our bodies and lead to a rapidly growing number of chronic lifestyle diseases. These include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, obesity, respiratory diseases, depression and anxiety disorders.
Our bodies are not designed to be constantly stressed, surrounded by pollutants, suffering from inflammation and chronic infections, being undersupplied with important nutrients and not getting enough sleep.
Our bodies react with maladaptations because this environment changes dramatically and the organism does not have time to adapt.
This mismatch between our genes and our modern lives is the main reason why chronic diseases have become the huge problem they are today.
Why we need functional medicine
The current medical system is primarily specialized in emergencies. It focuses on the rapid diagnosis and treatment of acute problems such as appendicitis or broken bones. There are specific, prescribed treatments such as drugs or surgery aimed at treating the immediate problem or symptom.
However, emergency medicine is not suitable for preventing or treating complex, chronic diseases. In most cases, it does not take into account each individual's unique genetic makeup or factors such as environmental toxins and the aspects of today's lifestyle that have a direct impact on the rise of chronic disease in modern Western society.
There is a huge disconnect between scientific research and medical practice. It can take decades for new findings from basic research to be incorporated into the medical treatment of chronic diseases. We don't want to wait that long.
